Tips and Tricks On How To Mow

Articles / The Cutting Edge

Getting your lawn mower ready for the season is a great way to make sure it runs smoothly and lasts longer. Here’s a step-by-step checklist to get it in top shape:

1. Clean It Up

Remove debris: Get rid of any dried grass, leaves, or dirt from last season, especially around the deck and engine.

Use a brush or air compressor to clean hard-to-reach areas.

2. Change the Oil

Drain the old oil: Run the mower for a few minutes to warm it up, then drain the oil while it’s warm (it flows better).

Refill with fresh oil: Check your owner’s manual for the recommended type and amount.

3. Sharpen or Replace the Blade

Remove the blade: Always disconnect the spark plug first!

Sharpen it using a metal file or take it to a shop.

Check for damage: If it’s nicked or bent, it’s better to replace it.

4. Check or Replace the Spark Plug

Inspect the spark plug: If it's dirty or corroded, replace it (they're cheap and make a big difference).

Gap it correctly: Use a gap tool to match the manufacturer’s specs.

5. Clean or Replace the Air Filter

Foam filters: Wash with soap and water, let dry, and oil lightly.

Paper filters: Just replace if dirty.

6. Fresh Gas

Drain old fuel: Gas goes bad after 30–60 days. Use a siphon pump to remove stale gas.

Add fresh gas: Consider using a fuel stabilizer if you don’t mow often.

7. Check the Wheels & Height Adjusters

Make sure they’re moving freely and not loose or wobbly.

8. Battery (if it’s electric or riding mower)

Charge it fully.

Clean the terminals and check for corrosion.
